Protect the Amazon Basin

Experts warn that, due to climate change, the Amazon Rainforest is close to reaching a tipping point, where it will begin to dry out and lose much of its biodiversity. The heat, droughts, and fires of recent years — still fresh in the memory of Amazonians — are proof that climate impacts are already a reality. In this context, oil exploration in the Amazon may be considered improper. Since the atmosphere has no borders, any initiative related to new fossil fuels anywhere in the world should be approached with caution.

At COP 30, governments have the opportunity to show they care about people and act responsibly, by reaching an agreement to halt new fossil fuel projects and begin a gradual phase-out of their use, as highlighted in the world’s leading scientific reports. The Amazon — and the world — need bold action, not greenwashing from fossil fuel companies.

Countries must agree on a moratorium on all new fossil fuel projects, starting with those in ecologically sensitive areas like the Amazon, where a single oil spill could be catastrophic. The oil could spread through rivers, reach protected areas, and even cross borders, harming entire communities and ecosystems.
